Favourite Sports

In room 12 we start every day off with maths. Todays walt is, W.A.L.T: Analyse and present data.

The topic we are studying in maths is statistics. Statistics is basically life, we use it all the time but we never notice. The snapshot above is a graph of room twelve’s favourite sports. As you can see different people like different things.

Sir Ernest Rutherford

Sir Ernest Rutherford, Lord of Nelson is an intelligent well known New Zealander. His face is placed on the 100 dollar notes presently. People may ask themselves why is his face printed on billions of 100 dollar notes and who is he? I can answer these questions for you.

Who is Sir Ernest Rutherford?

Sir Ernest Rutherford was born near Nelson, New Zealand, 30 August 1871. He is the man who is behind radioactivity.

He studied at Cambridge University's Cavendish Laboratory, which was at that time he was under directorship of Sir Joseph John Thomson, the leading authority on electromagnetic phenomena. His early work with Thomson led them to investigations of electricity and radiation and then eventually to a detailed study of radioactivity.

In 1898, Rutherford obtained his directorship at McGill University, Montreal, and soon demonstrated his talents for radioactivity elements. Although others had discovered radioactivity, Rutherford gain dominance to this part of his study. He found during his time two kinds of radiation existed, he called these Alpha and Beta. He then worked with Sir Frederick Soddy from 1902 to 1903, Rutherford identified the phenomenon of radioactive half-life and formulated the still-accepted explanation of radioactivity. During his time Rutherford was awarded the 1908 Nobel Prize for chemistry for his work in radioactivity. He moved to the University of Manchester in 1907, were almost immediately he began to examine alpha particles because since they were relatively massive and of atomic dimensions, he felt that they were the key to understanding the nature of matter.

Ernest eventually died of Hernia diseases because there was no immediate honored doctor to operate him. Hernia caused pain and other potentially serious health problems. Ernest died October 19, 1937 at the age of 66.

(Why is Sir Ernest Rutherford’s face printed on 100 dollar Notes explanation.)

Ernest is a Native New Zealander and a national hero, who discovered mankind’s understanding of Atomic Science in the early 29th century. He won several awards in his work of chemistry. The awards he won was a Nobel Prize in Chemistry, a Copley Medal, an Elliott Cresson Medal, a Franklin Medal, a Rumford Medal and a Matteucci Medal.

Three of his discoveries helped to shape modern science and basically created nuclear physics and the way we see the structure of the atom today.

Rutherford's first discovery was that elements are not immutable. His second discovery, the nuclear model of the atom, became the basis for how we see the atom today: a tiny nucleus surrounded by orbiting electrons. And his third great achievement, the splitting of the atom.

He is listed in The Dictionary of New Zealand Biography as, "the world's first successful alchemist". To wrap this question up is that he was very inspiring to other scientist, and he followed his dream with the help of other inspirational scientists.
He also had to feature on New Zealand currency in future, then get a good education by paying attention to all your teachers at school, never stop asking questions about things that you’re interested in, read about all sorts of different ideas from lots of different people and places, learn how to get on really well with other people so you can be a good leader, and get involved with important things that make a positive difference to hundreds or even thousands of people’s lives. That’s what Sir Edmund Hillary ($5); Kate Sheppard ($10); Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II ($20); Sir Apirana Ngata ($50); and Ernest, Lord Rutherford of Nelson ($100) have all done.

I hope your questions have been answered and Sir Ernest Rutherford is loved to scientist and more. His discoveries are unbelievable to see, read and to hear about. He will always be New Zealand's hero for his work in science. He is inspirational to me because he achieved a very massive thing. His life expresses the knowledge he learned and I should learn as well. I  and he will be a ‘Successful Alchemist.’

The Children of Nut the Lady of Heaven

The Children of Nut the Lady of Heaven

Ra is a powerful Pharaoh and he was very jealous of his powerful, so he vowed himself to be a man, and he knew he would grow old very old. So he spoke the word “Thoth”. His the god of wisdom and magic that comes into being. Thoth could speak and see all future of others. So Pharaoh asked about his. "There will be another ruler of Egypt after you, he will be the son of Nut." Pharaoh became angry and cursed Nut. "Nut will remain childless, as she will give birth to no child on any day in the year, neither on any night. I have spoken and so it will be." Nut was heartbroken, as she went to Thoth for help. Because he was the wisest of them all. Nut begged for help.  Thoth agreed to help her if she would marry him. Nut, who secretly loved Thoth, agreed. Thoth knew he could not change Pharaoh's curse. But there was one solution for her to be pregnant. So Thoth went to King Khonsu’s pyramid/palace. Khonsu was the moon god. Thoth and the king drank beer and ate honey, while they were in a game of draughts. There bets ran higher and higher by the minute. Thoth was clever and won many rounds of drafts, so many that he won enough of Khonsu's light to make five extra days. Thoth fitted these days in between the end of the old year and the beginning of the new year.
Poor Khonsu lost so much light, but as months went past his light of glory shone back. And Nut and Thoth had five children on the five new days that were never before in Pharaoh's year. Osiris was born on the first day and a great voice from heaven proclaimed "The Lord of All comes forth into the light!"
Harmachis was born on the second day. Set was born on the third day and Isis was born on the fourth day. On the last day Nephthys was born.
And Nut was happy. Thoth instructed Osiris and Isis in all his skills and powers to prepare them for the day when Osiris would become Pharaoh and Isis would be his consort.

Tu and Rei and Tuherepunga

Cook Island Legend

Tu and Rei and Tuherepunga

Once upon a time in the olden days, there was a legend about a husband Tu and wife Rei. Rei was pregnant with a pepe without Tu knowing. There’s also a ferocious Taniwha called Tuherepunga, that lives in the Lagoon. One day Tu and Rei decided to go and catch fish for their dinner. So they got into their canoe and paddled off into the Lagoon. As soon as they reached their perfect destination, Tu got his fishing gear out and started to fish. After a while Tu caught some fish for dinner. Rei was very pleased with her husband. Rei wanted to also dive down and get some clams. So she asked her husband, he straight away said No. But she really wanted to go down just once, he let her. He then said before she went down “ I’ll drop down the last line, before we go home.” When Rei went down Tuherepunga came up, looking like REI! (Tuherepunga can always change her appearance, she's like a shapeshifter.) When Tuherepunga was up on the canoe, Tu told her to get inside so they can go to shore. That’s when Rei came up and saw her husband paddling away from her. As she still saw the canoe insight she yelled out to her husband. “Come back to me and get me.” But Tuherepunga kept saying to Tu “Don’t listen to her, I’m your wife , listen to me, she is Tuherepunga.” Rei called to her husband 3 times, but he didn’t go back. Tuherepunga was too convincing. That’s when Rei started her calling to make the sea’s wave build up so high, to try and capsized the canoe. The chant was:

“ Tengaru, Tengaru nei e
Akapukehia, kia tiketike, kia hakahaka
Kare te papa i mua
Kua tikona, ete fai nga hitu

After Rei’s chant she called over and over again till the sea’s wave was so high. Rei end up drifting with the tide and Tu and Rei’s canoe end up capsizing. When their canoe went down Tuherepunga the Taniwha took Tu’s body with her. Rei was saved by the sea. So she went to shore and build a house on the beach. A couple months later she had a pepe boy. His name was Tu. He was named after his father. So every time Rei and pepe Tu came outside their beach house. They would always look out to the sea hoping they would see and find him.

My Favourite thing to do

Auckland Touch

Touch is the sport that I love to play. I learn new skills everyday. When I trial I get butterflies. But when I make it in I’ll be satisfied. Not forgetting that I always meet my new teammates, at trials or the first training.

I travel around New Zealand to go to different tournaments. Tournaments are held in different locations. These Touch competitions are extremely competitive. There are several tournaments, but the main competition takes an extra two days. That tournament is called IPS. My team will have six to four games on the main tournament, IPS.

To me sometimes it’s hard, having four to six games in just one day is pretty tough. I have to train hard to get really fit. I need a tough coach to push me. I also do individual training at home. This will also help with other parts of my life as well.

Now its time for my reward. After the main competition my team and I to go to prize giving. Two teams in every grade win a prize. We either get a trophy or a medal. We have to make sure we play very hard, so we play to win. The officials only give a prize to runner up - 2nd place, or the main winner - 1st place. The most exciting part is when the officials call the club of the year. It will be one of a small group competing in this elite .

Now its time for my break, I get another reward, yay! Its when my team mates get together to celebrate the tournament. Now this is called our break up. My manager or my coach decides where its going to be at. For example at the swimming pools or at someone’s house.

To me I thought it was over but it’s actually not. It’s now time for our club prize giving. Now this is when all the teams in the club gets together, to find out who’s MVP - Most Valuable Player and MIP - Most Improved Player of the year in my team. I am always nervous when it gets announced. I always try hard every year to get the MVP award. “ The Most Valuable Player is.....”

So that is why touch is my favourite thing to do. All of these special reasons above, tell you what its for. Also it could be your favourite thing to do, if you give it a go.

The Old And New

It was my first day of school, as my dad drove through the B Gate of Glen Innes Primary School. Slowly going past I saw our sign. It looked like this:

Memories were made with this sign. I remember one, when our old principal Mrs Martin. She decided we’ll have a Olympic fun day. So the juniors had to run around the whole school. When I was running I came across the sign. It was like 6x the size of me. Wow!

But know something has changed. Our old sign has disappeared in a flash. I am now 11 years of age. The school sign is now 3x the size of me. It has a whole new motto and more. This is what it looks like now:

There is a massive difference from new and old. So I cannot wait for more exciting adventures with this sign.

The Run

I waited silently, not daring to move, not even to breath. I crouched behind the car door, curled up in the tightest ball possible; hoping I would never be found. Coming towards me was a huge figure. I swallowed the lump in my throat, which was threatening to choke me. I waited. “Ahhh chooo,” a nasty sneeze escaped. Suddenly, it happened.

The figure turned around, with a machete in his hand, he swung a powerful slash. Ouch, I tried to scream, but my lips just stayed still. He cut deeply into my arm. I stood there shaking, I felt my blood draining . I heard a loud dripping noise through my left ear. The creature’s flesh suddenly turned inside out. His veins were  juiced with red blood, bugs were chewing deeply through his skin. I pivoted in the air with fear, I sprinted as fast as I could down the highway the car was parked on. It felt like I’d already run for hours. My heart was about to explode, I was gasping for air. I slowed
down. Out of the corner of my eye was a sign; ‘3 km to town’ my mouth dropped as well as my body. I then said to myself “3 kms to town, it’s all over.”
The creatures car skidded to a stop in front of me. He jumped out of his car; his sharp blade slowly moved closer to my throat. As the blade touched my skin, a loud noise was heard, ‘Bang’. The sound frightened me, it sounded like a gunshot. The creature fell sidewards and hit his head on his car. Sheriff Tom was luckily there to shoot the figure. The scared look in my face, slowly brightened up. I shook Tom’s hand. He squashed my hands so tight, then he started changing into the creature he killed. I didn’t know what was happening. I fainted as his gun moved closer to my throat.

“Chloe, Chloe.” I was woken up from my mothers shakes.
“Chloe its time to go to your little cousins monster party.”
“Oh no. It was all a dream.” I said with joy.

Athletics Day

As I'm huffing and puffing at the end of my race, my legs starts to wiggle and jiggle then I fall to the ground. "Ohh My Gosh." I said at the same time trying to get my breath back. " I Feel So Tired." Not so long I get my breath back and stand up. That was my fifth race I ran. But do you think I had a place in that race? Well I got the best number in all running races. First place.

"Go, Go, Go you can win this race." I cheered on one of my team members from Tangata. Now you must be thinking why do you need teams? Well every or during each year children get put in houses. The houses are called Aroha, Tangata, Whenua and Wairua. These houses are for the activities we do during the year too.

After our athletics everybody is so tired, that all children just want to go home. The enjoyable thing that I love about our athletics day, is that everyone gives it a go. If they lose they are always better next year. Because the main thing is a goal is to win and to win you need perseverance. That's what the students at Glen Innes School look ahead to.

Just another memory

"Roarrrr" That sound is one of my favourite animals at the Auckland Zoo. We went to the Zoo on the 1st of November 2012. Going there was a refreshing memory. Seeing all the animals and going into the meerkat tunnel. Going in the tunnel was one of my favourite things when I was small and still is now.

The animals I like now?
Chimpanzees are like human beings. They are very smart creatures. But the one I saw at the Auckland Zoo is more than a cool chimpanzee, it's an extraordinary chimpanzee. This chimp is called a Tea Party Chimp. Her name is Janie. Also she has a wonderful story behind her with some other chimps.

Red panda's are just so cute. When I saw the red panda, the animal was just lying down, head on paws as the breeze swept his fur side to side.

I have heaps of favourite animals but this a couple. The feeling I get when I am at the zoo is always an exiting feeling. Also when I'm There it's just another memory.

Technology Collage

The year 7 & 8 students at Glen Innes School go to Tamaki College for Technology. Mrs Anderson is our teacher for all the year 7's. We have been studying our passions. For the past weeks, Mrs Anderson taught us how to use Photoshop. Photoshop is a application that ables you to use a variety of abilities, that allows you to make a photo look good. Mrs Anderson taught us how to use the different tools. We learned how to use the paint bucket, text box, change the opacity of layers, make layers, delete layers and more. This was to help us on our up coming task. Our task was to make a collage. My collage showed my passions. This is what it looks like:

All the things that Ms Anderson taught me, helped me make my perfect collage.

A Yummy Dinner

On the 24th March 2013 my brother and cousin cooked dinner. At first I thought their cooking will taste disgusting. But when I took the first mouthful of their home made lasagna, I fell in love with it. The reason being is because my mum is normally the only one that cooks Lasagna.

On the side of our Lasagna we had garlic bread and salad. My mum also took a picture of me with the delicious meal they made:
